It was the summer of 1977, and for some reason, I think it was July of that year. At the time I only got two weeks of vacation a year, but it would go to three once I went past 5 years. We had not gone anywhere on our vacation in 1976 as we were buying the house and wanted to save our money for buying things when we moved into it.
The song Galveston had been released by Glen Campbell in 1969 and we both enjoyed Glen Campbell’s music and especially that song. It was about a 4 and ½ hour trip from our home to Galveston. Connie and I had decided to go there starting on a Wednesday and stay till Saturday for a short vacation.
We left that Wednesday morning around 9:30 as we did not want to hit all the morning traffic going into Dallas for work. Now at the time, we had a parakeet and I am sorry I have forgotten his/her name. Connie had raised parakeets when she was in high school. Well maybe she did not raise them, but they had a bunch, I could not even count how many she had. We then had one after we got married in 1970 and continued to have one until 1977 when we got our first sheltie.
Guess who went with us on that vacation, yep your right we took our parakeet. With the parakeet in the back and us packed for a few days in Galveston we were on the road. We stopped on the way down were each of us could just run in and get something because Connie did not want to leave the parakeet alone.
We made it to Galveston and started driving around looking for a hotel. We must have spent about an hour looking when Connie looked over to me and said I really would rather go home than stay. The place did not live up to what she was expecting, she felt the beach was not very pretty and most of the hotels at that time seem to be old, not any big new ones. So, after talking it over and riding around seeing the town we started our return trip home about 5 PM. I was able to talk her into going inside a place and having a small steak just north of Houston. If I remember correctly it was a Bonanza or Ponderosa. But we had to eat in a hurry as she was concerned about our parakeet. We arrive home around 10 pm.
We always joked that we probably took the shortest vacation ever because it only lasted a little over 12 hours.
Even though it was short we had a good time as we always just like getting in the car and going for rides. Aw, the memories of those happy times warm my heart.
Today was Tuesday, December 11th, 2018 and I had lunch with Connie and my friend Lizzie. I was telling her about this page when she said: “It probably took you longer to write about it than to take the trip”. U thought that was so, funny that I just had to include it with this page.
